Leading the Children

I’m at Annual Conference right now.  If you are not United Methodist, “Annual Conference” is our yearly meeting of clergy for the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church where we do the business of the church (voting delegates to general and jurisdictional conference, voting on petitions, ordaining and commissioning new clergy, etc.).  We are blessed to have this meeting in beautiful Lake Junaluska, NC, so the scenery is just breathtaking (although stormy today).

Yesterday they called up to the stage the ordination candidates that are slated to be ordained on Sunday morning.  These candidates were asked a series of questions by Bishop Goodpaster and one of these questions asked the candidates if they committed to teaching the children about Christ.  The Bishop then turned to us and reminded us that this is the only ordination question that refers to a specific age group, which goes to show how important the spiritual growth of children was in the mind of John Wesley.  I immediately said aloud, “AMEN!”

I’ve been serving in children’s ministry for  a long time so what the bishop was saying was like preaching to the choir where I was concerned.  How effectively we lead kids to Christ will determine how Christ’s church grows in the future.  This is SO vital!  HUMC is adding some neat things that I’m pretty jazzed about – we will be offering an hour-long children’s worship experience (a DYNAMIC one!) for kids K-5th grade during the 10:30 service beginning in late August.  The curriculum for this is awesome and I can’t wait for the kids to experience it.  We are looking at ways to incorporate our  youth in leadership for our children – mainly in mentor capacities, which is very exciting!  I’m leading a webinar this summer for parents so they can feel better equipped to talk to their kids about their faith and about the Bible in general.  Just good stuff.

If you’d like to be a part of our leadership team or to simply volunteer to help with our new dynamic children’s worship, please email me at monicah@huntersvilleumc.org .  If you’d like to sign up to participate in my FREE webinar (online seminar) click HERE.  I personally invite you to be a part of one of the most important ministries in the church . . . leading kids to Christ!
